Cultural Beijing - Zhoukoudian Site

One of the most exciting archaeological discoveries of the 20th century happened just outside of Beijing. During the 1920s and 1930s, fossils and artifacts belonging to “Peking Man” (Homo erectus pekinensis) were excavated from a cave at Zhoukoudian, about 50 km southwest from the city center. Today, visitors to the Zhoukoudian Site can tour the cave complex where the original Peking Man fossils were found and see nearly 100,000 stone tools, mammal fossils, and other artifacts of life in prehistoric times.
