The Phoenix International Media Center in eastern Beijing is an iconic media production facility built by architect Shao Weiping, and was the recipient of the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering’s prestigious Outstanding Structure Award in 2017. Weiping’s design is based on the Möbius strip, creating a harmonious relationship with the surrounding area. Likewise, his design is a DNA-inspired double helix, including circular contours resonant of the yin-yang and other symbols from Chinese philosophy. More than just a hub of film and television production, however, the Phoenix International Media Center prides itself on hosting some of the country’s finest artists, such as renowned sculptor Zhang Hua, whose exhibition “Flying Dream,” was recently on display. Despite their nature as stationary objects, Zhang’s works are full of movement, bursting with a playful exuberance and excitement that reminds viewers of life’s little pleasures. Whether it’s a couple immortalized mid-step during a romantic dance, synchronized swimmers caught in the throes of divine passion, or a fantastical woman forever playing lullabies on her flute in the night sky, to look at Zhang’s works is to know that despite all of its trials and tribulations, to live is to find bliss in the ineffable moments of humanity’s elegance.
